The perfect excuse for a high school student living in the countryside to move to the city is to go to college.
I grew up in Kagawa Prefecture in an era when there was no internet, no smartphones, and even flip phones. I dreamed of "a place that's not here" through books and manga until I was in high school. I think my dream at the time was to "get out of here."
I fulfilled my dream and went to Osaka to study abroad, where I discovered theater.
After going through a series of events, I decided to return to Kagawa five years ago, but I didn't know anyone in the theater world and thought there was no way I could do theater in a place like that.
So for me, I was very lucky to have Notos Studio.
Once I decided to create my own play, I experienced a constant culture shock.
When most people think of theater, they imagine the glittering stages of Shiki Theatre Company or Takarazuka.
People kept asking me in amazement, "A play in such a small space?" I was surprised and squirmed around, but then luckily we were able to do a play.
However, I never imagined that Kokikaru's work would be performed at this theater.
"Other people's common sense is other people's nonsense, and your common sense is other people's nonsense"
I believe that when people lose this sense, they will no longer be able to respect someone or something that is different from themselves.
Your time and someone else's time blend together to create time together - I think that's what makes theater so fun.
Being unchanging is not strength.
Now, Kokikaru feels that time and life are equivalent.
I want to continue making works so that those who have given me their limited time will come and see them. And of course, for the audience who are also now giving me their time.
Now and always.

The work was exhibited inside the vault of "Tetugakuya," a former credit union renovated from the town of Tadotsu. The closed vault is filled with music, words, and movement, and the owner, who is a student of philosophy, described it as "more Dostoevsky than you'd imagine."

When people encounter something different, new, or something they don't understand, they usually react negatively.
When I first read Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground," I felt it accurately described the darkness in my heart, and it left me with a chilling feeling that I never wanted to read it again.
On the other hand, living in Japan today, we are increasingly surrounded by clean, safely processed foods.
Maybe that's why my daily life seems boring, inorganic, and cramped, and I feel suffocated. And sometimes I have the illusion that I've become a mouse, an animal in a laboratory. At times like that, I wonder if I should try eating a mud ball.
In other words, we want to be exposed to new things that we don't know yet, things that are a little strange and unusual.
It is often said that theater, so-called culture and the arts, are useless.
I now believe that the reason for this is that it is useful for the "future" rather than the "present."
For example, we want to create a future where when children come across something strange or a person they have never seen before, instead of rejecting it, they can say, "I don't really understand what it is, but it's interesting, so I guess it's okay, let's play together."
Coquecal believes that the true power of art and culture lies in nurturing the ability to enjoy and embrace new things and pass them on to the next generation.

On the way home from school, I would stop by a bookstore in town, buy a book with my pocket money, and rush home to read it engrossed in reading. I would also go from shop to shop on the shopping street and play in front of the stores. That was how I spent my childhood.
Now that I'm an adult, I have the opportunity to interview people who own shops, and when I ask them what is unique about their shop, I often meet people who say, "I don't know, it's just an ordinary shop."
Although the word "normal" can be expressed as common sense, everyday life, or stereotypes, I feel that it is actually very subjective, and that each person names what they are "familiar with" as normal. Everyone hesitates to step out of what they are familiar with. But what does it mean to take a step forward from there?
It's important to be normal.
However, when you are caught up in the ordinary and feel short of breath, or when nothing is moving in your heart, I think it's time to take a step away from the ordinary. A state where you can't breathe and even your heart is motionless is not normal.
For now, I think it would be better to go on a trip or a drive.
But Kokikar believes that theatre offers a way out of the "prescribed normalcy."

Collages based on the works of Kitahara Hakushu, an author with a connection to Tadotsu, are on display at a cafe in a renovated traditional townhouse in Tadotsu.
The work was composed mainly of music and movement, and focused on the three wives of Hakushu Kitahara and sparrows. It also used video to create a different atmosphere in an old house. Many local people, including the residents of Tadotsu, attended the performance, and it was called "art theater."

"This play is not a dialogue-based one. There is no singing like in a musical, and no sword fighting like in a period drama. Works by Hakushu Kitahara are featured, but Hakushu Kitahara himself does not appear."
When I explained this to them, I saw a confused person with a puzzled expression. When I added, "If anything, it's probably closer to the feeling of listening to music or looking at a painting," the person tilted their head and said, "It's 'art theater,'" which is what I named it.
The fragments of words that spilled out of Hakushu were sewn together and made into a stage piece. I hope that you will enjoy what is happening before your eyes just as Hakushu was described as a big baby. (Text: Kiriko Kaoru)
[Anecdotes about Hakushu Kitahara]
Hakushu Kitahara married three times in his life. The first was Toshiko, the second was Akiko (Ayako/Akiko), and the third was Kikuko. The first two were love marriages, and Kikuko was an arranged marriage.
When Toshiko and Hakushu met, Toshiko was already married, and the two ended up in prison for adultery. His second wife, Akiko, a poet, described Hakushu as a "big, painful baby." It was his third wife, Kikuko, who continued to support the popular writer throughout his life.
